Archival Overview

Supreme leader of the Moroccan urban armed resistance and founder of the Secret Army in Casablanca, who swallowed poison while detained to ensure he would never betray his underground comrades under torture.

Biographical Record

Muhammad Zerktouni (c. 1927–1954) was an early leader in the Istiqlal youth organization and scout movement in the Medina of Casablanca. Following the French exile of Sultan Mohammed V in 1953, Zerktouni founded the Moroccan Secret Army (Al-Jaysh al-Sirri), organizing clandestine fedayeen cells, intelligence, and urban guerrilla attacks.

He masterminded high-profile sabotage strikes against colonial infrastructure, including the December 1953 Central Market operation targeting colonial segregation. Betrayed and arrested by French intelligence on June 18, 1954, Zerktouni swallowed a hidden cyanide pill during interrogation, dying instantly at age twenty-seven to take all resistance secrets with him to the grave.
