Archival Overview
Revered as the greatest neoclassical Arab poet of the 20th century, hailed as the 'Poet of the Arab World' for his majestic verse.
Biographical Record
Muhammad Mahdi al-Jawahiri was born into an illustrious clerical family in Najaf, receiving rigorous classical training in Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and poetic meter. Moving to Baghdad, he established several crusading newspapers, including Al-Furat and Al-Rai al-Amm, fearlessly condemning political tyranny and foreign domination.
Jawahiri's poetry was unmatched in grandiloquence, emotional resonance, and linguistic mastery. His famous eulogy for his brother Jafar, killed during the 1948 Al-Wathbah uprising, became a rallying anthem for Arab revolutionary youth. Exiled for decades, he remained an unbending champion of human freedom until his death in Damascus at ninety-seven.
