Biographical Record

Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani was one of the most brilliant hadith authorities and historians produced by the University of al-Qarawiyyin. During the escalating European encroachment on Morocco at the turn of the 20th century, he traveled to Medina and Damascus, lecturing in the Umayyad Mosque.

His masterwork Salwat al-Anfas wa Muhadathat al-Akyas bi-Man Uqbira min al-Ulama wa al-Sulaha bi-Fas is the definitive spiritual and academic encyclopedia of Fez across twelve centuries. Returning to Morocco in 1926, he was received with national acclaim by the Ulema and public.
