Archival Overview
Third Sultan of the Idrisid dynasty who succeeded his father Idris II in 828 AD, dividing administrative governorships among his brothers upon the advice of his grandmother Kenza.
Biographical Record
Muhammad ibn Idris al-Azhar was the eldest son and successor of Moulay Idris II. Ascending the Moroccan throne in 828 AD at age twenty-three, he faced the delicate challenge of governing an expansive kingdom with eleven capable brothers seeking royal prerogatives.
Upon the wise maternal counsel of his grandmother Princess Kenza al-Awrabiya, Muhammad delegated regional governorships to his brothers—granting the Sous, Rif, Taza, and Chaouia—while retaining supreme royal authority in Fez. His reign laid the administrative foundations of Moroccan regional decentralization.
