Archival Overview
Master architect and hydraulic engineer who designed the famous Almoravid Koubba (Koubba Ba'adiyin) in Marrakech in 1117, the sole surviving Almoravid monument in the city.
Biographical Record
Muhammad ibn Ali al-Tighrari was the chief royal master of works under Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf. Tasked with constructing monumental ablution pavilions for the Grand Mosque of Ben Youssef, he designed the extraordinary Almoravid Koubba (Koubba Ba'adiyin) in 1117 AD.
Al-Tighrari achieved a breathtaking engineering and artistic marvel: an intricate octagonal dome adorned with multi-foiled horseshoe arches, sebka tracery, and sophisticated hydraulic piping that brought fresh Atlas mountain water into the heart of the Medina. His monument stands today as the supreme testament to Almoravid architectural brilliance.
