Archival Overview
Visionary Algerian-born scholar and mystic known as 'The Grand Senussi' who founded the Senussi Sufi revivalist order in Mecca, Cyrenaica, and Jaghbub, establishing desert universities across the Sahara.
Biographical Record
Born in Mostaganem, Algeria, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Senussi studied at the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez and in Cairo and Mecca, establishing the Senussi order in the Hijaz in 1837. Facing Ottoman suspicion, he transferred the spiritual headquarters of the order to Cyrenaica in 1843, building the White Zawiya (Al-Bayda).
In 1856, he moved deep into the Libyan desert to the remote oasis of Jaghbub, founding an Islamic university that trained thousands of nomadic Bedouin in literacy, agriculture, and spiritual ethics. His order provided the spiritual and organizational backbone for the anti-colonial resistance of Omar al-Mukhtar.
