Archival Overview

Celebrated Moroccan ambassador sent by Sultan Moulay Ismail to King Charles II of England in 1682, elected Fellow of the Royal Society for his scholarly erudition and horsemanship.

Biographical Record

Muhammad ibn Haddu al-Attar was selected by Sultan Moulay Ismail to lead a grand embassy to London in 1681–1682 to negotiate a peace and commercial treaty regarding the evacuation of English-occupied Tangier. Arriving with a retinue of thirty Moroccan officials and gifts of Barbary horses and lions, he captivated English high society.

He was received at Whitehall Palace by King Charles II, attended meetings of the Royal Society, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society—becoming the first Moroccan so honored. His portrait was painted by court painter Sir Godfrey Kneller.
