Archival Overview

Third leader of the Marinids who pushed his armies to the gates of Fez and Meknes, falling in a major clash against Almohad forces.

Biographical Record

Muhammad I ibn Abd al-Haqq assumed leadership of the Marinids upon his brother Uthman's death. Bold and aggressive, he directed Marinid cavalry towards the imperial urban centers of Meknes and Fez, demanding surrender from Almohad governors.

In 1244, Caliph Abu al-Hasan al-Said organized a massive counter-strike; Muhammad met the imperial army near the river Oued Sebou where, after inflicting heavy casualties, he fell in the thick of battle. His brother Abu Yahya Abu Bakr succeeded him and completed the conquest of Fez.
