Archival Overview
Third Husainid sovereign of Tunis, celebrated as a passionate patron and composer of Andalusian Malouf music who systematized the Tunisian musical Nawbat and rebuilt royal artistic patronage.
Biographical Record
Muhammad I ar-Rashid Bey reigned as the third Husainid Bey of Tunis from 1756 until his death in 1759. He ascended the throne following the turbulent civil conflicts between the Husainid and Pacha factions, successfully restoring dynastic peace.
An accomplished poet and musician himself, he played the oud and rebab, gathering Andalusian masters from throughout the Regency to codify the traditional Tunisian Malouf. He is credited with cataloging and organizing the thirteen traditional classical nawbat suites, founding the legendary Rashidiyya artistic tradition centuries later.
