Biographical Record
Abu al-Abbas Muhammad I reigned for fifteen prosperous years over Ifriqiya. A capable military strategist, his naval fleets dominated the central Mediterranean, seizing Messina in Sicily (843 AD) and raiding as far as the mouth of the Tiber in Italy.
Domestically, he expanded the defensive fortifications of Tunisia's maritime coastline, notably renovating the magnificent Ribat of Sousse and constructing the Kasbah watchtower, making the Sahel coast an impregnable naval bastion.
