Archival Overview
Muradid Bey of Tunis who built the magnificent Ottoman-style domed Mosque of Sidi Mahrez in the Bab Souika quarter of Tunis, modeled on the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul.
Biographical Record
Muhammad Bey al-Muradi was the eldest son of Murad II. Surviving twenty years of dynastic warfare during the Revolutions of Tunis, he emerged as sole ruler in 1686, focusing his energies on monumental religious architecture.
Devoted to the patron saint of Tunis, Sidi Mahrez, Muhammad Bey built the magnificent Mosque of Sidi Mahrez in 1692. Inspired by the imperial mosques of Istanbul with its grand central dome and four half-domes, it remains the most dazzling Ottoman-Hanafi architectural masterpiece in Tunisia.
