Biographical Record
Muhammad al-Saffar was a distinguished legal scholar from Tetouan. In the wake of Morocco's defeat at the Battle of Isly (1844), Sultan Abd al-Rahman sent an embassy to Paris in December 1845 headed by Abd al-Qadir Ash'ash, with al-Saffar as head secretary.
His travel account, Rihlat al-Saffar ila Baris, provides a deeply observant Moroccan analysis of post-Revolutionary French society, technological advancements, printing presses, hospitals, and museums, serving as one of the seminal documents of the Arab and Maghrebi Nahda (Renaissance).
