Archival Overview
18th-century historian and chronicler of the southwestern Tunisian oasis of Nefta, who documented the trans-Saharan caravan trade, date palm irrigation systems, and Sufi orders of the Djerid.
Biographical Record
Muhammad al-Nafati was a native of Nefta, known as the spiritual 'corridor of saints' in the southwest Djerid. Deeply educated in local history and Islamic sciences, he composed comprehensive chronicles documenting the tribal covenants, water distribution regulations, and desert trade routes linking Tunis through Nefta to Ghadames and Timbuktu.
His surviving manuscripts provide an invaluable historical record of southern Tunisia's economic vitality and cultural autonomy during the 18th century.
