Archival Overview
Saadian sultan who was deposed by his uncle Abd al-Malik and allied with King Sebastian of Portugal, drowning during the fateful Battle of the Three Kings (Wadi al-Makhazin) in 1578.
Biographical Record
Abu Abdallah Muhammad II al-Mutawakkil inherited the Saadian sultanate in 1574. Deposed two years later by his uncle Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik I with Ottoman backing, al-Mutawakkil fled to Portugal to seek the military intervention of the young King Sebastian.
This disastrous alliance culminated in the Battle of the Three Kings at Ksar El Kebir on August 4, 1578. The Portuguese crusading army was annihilated; Sultan Abd al-Malik died of illness during the fighting, King Sebastian perished in combat, and al-Mutawakkil drowned while attempting to cross the swollen River Makhazin.
