Archival Overview

Supreme Amenokal (Sovereign Paramount Chief) of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg from 1905 to 1920, who preserved tribal law, peace, and cultural heritage.

Biographical Record

Moussa ag Amastan was elected supreme Amenokal of the Kel Ahaggar in 1905 during a critical epoch of Saharan transition. A man of profound wisdom, chivalry, and poetic elegance, he navigated treacherous geopolitical tides to protect his people from total destruction while maintaining the integrity of customary Tuareg law ('Aserf').

Moussa established a famous intellectual relationship and pact of mutual respect with Christian hermit Charles de Foucauld at Tamanrasset, assisting Foucauld in compiling the monumental Tamahaq-French dictionary. His sublime love poems dedicated to his muse, the poetess Dassine Oult Yemma, are celebrated gems of classical Tamazight literature.
