Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan of Morocco from 1912 to 1927 whose calm, dignified leadership preserved the Alaouite monarchy during the turbulent Rif War and who inaugurated the Grand Mosque of Paris in 1926.
Biographical Record
Moulay Yusef was a son of Sultan Hassan I, succeeding his brother Abd al-Hafid in 1912. Reining during the turbulent years of the First World War and Abdelkrim al-Khattabi's Rif War, he maintained the structural continuity of the Moroccan state and religious endowments.
In July 1926, Moulay Yusef traveled to France to solemnly inaugurate the Grand Mosque of Paris, erected in honor of Muslim soldiers who fell in WWI. His youngest son, Sidi Mohammed (later King Mohammed V), was carefully mentored under his guidance to become the father of modern Moroccan independence.
