Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan (1790–1792), charismatic and fiercely combative son of Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdallah who led the prolonged siege of Spanish-held Ceuta before dying of battlefield wounds.
Biographical Record
Moulay al-Yazid was a tempestuous figure in Moroccan history. Often rebelling against his moderate father Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdallah, he ascended the throne upon his father's death in 1790 with fervent popular and tribal acclaim. Declaring holy war against Spanish enclaves, he besieged Ceuta with thousands of volunteers.
His volatile reign triggered internal conflict with his brother Moulay Hisham; in a fierce battle outside Marrakech in February 1792, Yazid was shot by a stray bullet in the cheek and died shortly after, leaving the throne to his pious brother Moulay Sulayman.
