Archival Overview
Learned Alaouite Sultan of Morocco who reigned for thirty years, authored treatises on Islamic theology, modernized Moroccan commercial ports, and maintained peace during the Napoleonic Wars.
Biographical Record
Moulay Slimane was an erudite Islamic jurist and calligrapher who studied at the University of al-Qarawiyyin. Ascending the throne following the death of his brother Yazid, he pacified civil strife and reunited Morocco under unified royal governance.
During the stormy decades of the Napoleonic Wars, Slimane navigated a sophisticated neutral foreign policy, banning piracy, negotiating with the United States, and maintaining cordial relations with Britain. A deeply religious reformer, he built mosques and madrasas throughout Fez, Meknes, and Marrakech.
