Biographical Record
Moulay Rachid was the son of Moulay Ali Cherif. Endowed with fierce military ambition and charismatic leadership, he gathered loyal tribal hosts in the eastern plains of the Moulouya and the Rif before marching on Fez, capturing the imperial capital in June 1666 and proclaiming himself Sultan of Morocco.
Rachid dismantled rival warlords and the powerful religious republic of the Dila'iyya, conquering Marrakech in 1669 and pacifying the Souss. He instituted monetary reforms, constructed the celebrated Kasbah des Cherarda in Fez, and revitalized trade before his tragic death from a horse fall in Marrakech.
