Archival Overview
First sovereign leader of the Alaouite Dynasty (1636–1664) who rallied the oasis tribes of Tafilalt, liberated Sijilmassa, and expanded Alaouite power across the Moulouya Valley and eastern Morocco.
Biographical Record
Moulay Muhammad I was proclaimed leader of the Alaouite Shurafa of Tafilalt in 1636 following the abdication of his father, Moulay Ali Sharif. Confronting the dominant regional hegemony of the Zawiya Dila'iya and the leaders of Tabu'samt, he unified the oasis populations and captured the strategic oasis city of Sijilmassa.
He led extensive campaigns across the Draa Valley and into the Angad plains of eastern Morocco, taking Oujda. In August 1664, a dynastic battle for supremacy erupted between Moulay Muhammad and his ambitious younger half-brother Moulay Rashid; Muhammad was killed in the battle, paving the way for Moulay Rashid to conquer Fez and found the unified Alaouite Sultanate.
