Archival Overview
Visionary Alaouite Sultan (1873–1894) known as 'The Sovereign on Horseback' who spent his reign in the saddle leading legendary Harkas to unify Moroccan tribes and preserve independence.
Biographical Record
Succeeding his father Mohammed IV, Moulay Hassan I was one of the greatest rulers in modern Moroccan history. Facing intense European imperial pressure during the Scramble for Africa, he maintained Moroccan territorial integrity through relentless personal mobility, spending months in imperial tents with his army.
He conducted famous Harkas into the Sous, Tafilalet, and the Rif, bringing rebellious kaids into obedience. At the 1880 Madrid Conference, his diplomats defended Moroccan sovereignty. He modernized the army with modern Krupp artillery, dying in his saddle during an expedition in 1894.
