Biographical Record
Moulay Ali Cherif was the revered chieftain of the Sharifs of Yanbu who had settled in the lush oasis of Tafilalet in southeastern Morocco during the 13th century. Amid the collapse of the Saadian dynasty, the inhabitants of Tafilalet turned to him for leadership against the Zawiya Dila'iyya.
In 1631, he was proclaimed Emir and sovereign of Tafilalet. His wisdom, piety, and military coordination laid the foundation for his sons Moulay Muhammad and Moulay Rachid to conquer Fez and Marrakech, founding the Alaouite dynasty that has reigned over Morocco for four centuries.
