Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan (1734–1736), son of Moulay Ismail, who attempted to restore monarchical order in Fez and Meknes during the mid-18th century crisis of succession.
Biographical Record
Moulay Ali ibn Ismail was elevated to the sultanate in 1734 by the garrison commanders of the Abid al-Bukhari during the protracted succession struggles following Moulay Ismail's death. Ruling from Fez, he sought to rein in the fiscal exactions of military chiefs and restore regular trade routes.
Deposed in 1736 in favor of his brother Abdallah, Moulay Ali retired peacefully to a scholarly retreat in Fez, where he passed away in 1737.
