Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan (1727–1729) who succeeded his formidable father Moulay Ismail, reigning through the turbulent initial phase of Black Guard (Abid al-Bukhari) military ascendancy.
Biographical Record
Moulay Ahmad ad-Dhahabi was the designated successor of the legendary Sultan Moulay Ismail. Reared in the palatial grandeur of Meknes, his accession in 1727 was immediately tested by the immense power of the 150,000-strong Black Guard (Abid al-Bukhari) and rebellious tribal coalitions.
Though deposed briefly in 1728 in favor of his brother Abd al-Malik, Ahmad rallied loyal loyalist corps in Fez and regained the throne, ruling until his death from illness in Meknes in March 1729.
