Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan who navigated the protracted mid-18th-century crisis following Moulay Ismail's death, successfully reasserting royal authority and fathering Sultan Sidi Mohammed III.
Biographical Record
Son of Sultan Moulay Ismail and the scholarly Queen Lalla Khenatha bint Bakkar, Moulay Abdallah was proclaimed Sultan in 1729 amidst the rebellion of the Black Guard (Abid al-Bukhari) and rival princely claimants. Over thirty tumultuous years, he was repeatedly deposed and restored six times.
Through tenacious resolve and the diplomatic counsel of his mother, he gradually neutralized military factions, restored administrative discipline in Fez and Meknes, and groomed his son Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah (Mohammed III) to inherit a restored, peaceful empire.
