Archival Overview
Alaouite Sultan of Morocco who reigned for thirty-seven years, courageously supporting Emir Abdelkader against the French conquest of Algeria and fighting the Battle of Isly in 1844.
Biographical Record
Moulay Abd al-Rahman succeeded his uncle Moulay Slimane in 1822. When France invaded Algeria in 1830, Abd al-Rahman faced an immense geopolitical crisis. Responding to appeals from Tlemcen, he provided military, financial, and logistical asylum to Emir Abdelkader's resistance army.
This led to the French bombardment of Tangier and Mogador and the pivotal Battle of Isly on August 14, 1844, where Moroccan imperial troops engaged General Bugeaud. Despite military defeat, Abd al-Rahman successfully preserved Morocco's national sovereignty, modernizing customs and negotiating commercial treaties with Britain and Spain.
