"If someone asks about the soul of Japan: it is the wild cherry blossom glowing in the morning sun."

Archival Overview

Foremost scholar of Kokugaku (National Learning) in Edo Japan who spent thirty-five years deciphering the archaic 8th-century 'Kojiki' and articulated the supreme Japanese aesthetic philosophy of 'Mono no aware' (the pathos of things).

Biographical Record

Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801) practiced medicine in Matsusaka while dedicating his nights to the linguistic study of ancient Japanese texts, rejecting Chinese Confucian rationalism and Buddhist pessimism in favor of authentic indigenous emotional sensitivity (Makoto).

In his monumental forty-four-volume commentary 'Kojiki-den' (1798), Norinaga unlocked the forgotten phonetic script of Japan's oldest chronicle. In his study of 'The Tale of Genji', he defined 'Mono no aware'—the deep, bittersweet emotional empathy felt in the presence of life's fleeting, ephemeral beauty, such as falling cherry blossoms.
