Archival Overview
Celebrated as the 'Troubadour of the Beni Amer', the greatest 19th-century epic poet of western Algeria whose verse preserved national identity and popular resistance.
Biographical Record
Mostefa Ben Brahim was born into the noble nomadic and agricultural tribe of the Beni Amer in the fertile plains of Sidi Bel Abbès. A master of the Arabic language, traditional rhythms, and oral folklore, he composed hundreds of sweeping epic qasidas that documented tribal history, tragic romances, and the devastating impact of French colonial land confiscations.
His poems, including 'Goumri' and 'Sidi El Houari', were memorized and performed by Bedouin flutists (qassabin) and singers across western Algeria and Morocco. Today, a major town in Sidi Bel Abbès province is named Mostefa Ben Brahim in his eternal honor.
