Archival Overview

Algerian national hero acclaimed as the 'Father of the Algerian Revolution', founding historic chief who self-financed, armed, and commanded Wilaya I in the rugged Aurès Mountains.

Biographical Record

Mostefa Ben Boulaïd (1917–1956) was a prosperous mill owner and decorated WWII veteran who committed his entire personal fortune to purchasing weapons and training young Algerian patriots. A key member of the Group of 22, he took sole responsibility for launching the revolution in the fierce Aurès mountain redoubt.

Captured while crossing the Tunisian border to procure heavy weaponry in 1955, he executed a daring escape from the French colonial prison of Constantine with ten comrades. Returning to lead his guerrilla battalions, he was assassinated when a French booby-trapped radio transmitter detonated in his mountain headquarters in March 1956.
