"Peace is like the rain which makes the grass grow; war is like the wind which dries it up. Thaba Bosiu is our shield, but wisdom is our fortress."

Archival Overview

Founding Father and King of Lesotho who gathered refugee clans scattered by the Lifaqane wars atop the impregnable mountain fortress of Thaba Bosiu, using military genius and diplomatic skill to defeat Boer and British armies and preserve his nation's independence.

Biographical Record

Moshoeshoe I (c. 1786–1870) was an enlightened statesman who united disparate southern African clans into the Basotho nation. Establishing his capital atop Thaba Bosiu (Mountain at Night)—a sheer sandstone plateau with fresh springs—Moshoeshoe successfully repelled Zulu impis, Boer commandos, and British expeditionary forces.

Following his victory over British General Cathcart at the Battle of Berea in 1852, Moshoeshoe famously sent a courteous diplomatic letter asking for peace while the British were retreating, preserving their honor while securing his borders. In 1868, he skillfully negotiated British protectorate status directly with Queen Victoria, preventing Lesotho from being absorbed into racist Boer republics.
