Archival Overview

Legendary dramatic chanteuse and actress whose electrifying interpretations of Félix Leclerc, Gilles Vigneault, and Claude Léveillée in Paris, Sopot, and Expo 67 placed Quebec chanson on the world stage.

Biographical Record

Leyrac began as a radio actress in the 1940s before studying acting in Paris. In 1965, her commanding, theatrical vocal delivery won the Grand Prix at both the International Song Festival in Sopot (Poland) and the Golden Orpheus in Bulgaria, sparking a sensation across European concert halls.

At Montreal's Expo 67, Leyrac gave historic solo concerts, capturing the national imagination with her renditions of 'Mon pays', 'Pour cet amour', and Brecht-Weill theater songs. An Officer of the Order of Canada and Prix Denise-Pelletier laureate, she retired to the Eastern Townships.
