Visionary theatrical innovator who founded the legendary Regional Theater Troupe of El Kef, decentralizing Tunisian drama and staging masterworks like El Halag and Diwan Ezzanj.
Biographical Record
Moncef Souissi was a towering figure in modern Arab theater. Believing that culture should not be confined to the capital, he moved to the northwestern mountainous city of El Kef in 1967 to found the pioneering Troupe Théâtrale du Kef.
His innovative productions—including El Halag (The Barber of the Medjerdah) and Atchan Ya Sabaya—blended Bertolt Brecht's epic theater techniques with North African oral storytelling (Fadawi), producing a dynamic theatrical renaissance that influenced troupes across the Arab world.
