Archival Overview
Major Tunisian Francophone poet known as the 'Poet of the Sea', whose evocative collections such as Cap Africa celebrated the fishermen, winds, and ancient maritime traditions of Mahdia.
Biographical Record
Moncef Ghachem was born into a family of fishermen in the historic Fatimid port of Mahdia. Deeply attached to the Mediterranean coastline, he made the sea, fishing boats, and sailors' lore the core mythology of his acclaimed poetry and prose.
Writing in rich, sensory French infused with Maghrebi cadence, his collections—including Cap Africa, Car nous sommes en mer, and L'Épervier de Mahdia—earned prestigious international honors, including the Prix Albert-Camus.
