Archival Overview
Beloved patriotic Bey of Tunis who boldly supported the Neo-Destour independence movement, refused Vichy anti-Jewish laws during Nazi occupation, and was unjustly deposed by France in 1943.
Biographical Record
Muhammad al-Moncef ascended the throne in June 1942. Deeply patriotic, he refused to serve as a passive colonial figurehead, presenting French authorities with a manifesto demanding equal political rights, mandatory schooling in Arabic, and cabinet government.
During the six-month Nazi occupation of Tunisia (1942-1943), Moncef Bey courageously shielded his Jewish subjects, granting royal decorations and refusing to enforce Vichy anti-Semitic yellow-star decrees. Following the Allied liberation in May 1943, French General Henri Giraud falsely accused him of Axis collaboration to remove a nationalist sovereign, exiling him to Pau in France, where he died revered by his people.
