Archival Overview

Visionary tactical mastermind who co-founded and managed the legendary FLN Football Team in 1958 and later built ES Sétif into an African powerhouse.

Biographical Record

Mokhtar Arribi was an exceptional football player and tactician who starred for Cannes and Lens in the French first division. In April 1958, under the clandestine instructions of Mohamed Boumezrag and the FLN, Arribi masterminded the secret escape of top Algerian players across the Swiss border to Tunisia.

As player-manager of the FLN team, Arribi led the squad through over ninety international matches across Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, defeating world-class national teams and winning global admiration for the Algerian cause. After 1962, he founded the legendary ES Sétif club, leading them to the 1988 African Champions Cup.
