Archival Overview

Congolese political leader who declared the mineral-rich State of Katanga independent in 1960, employed European mercenaries, and later returned as Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Biographical Record

The son of a wealthy Lunda merchant and related to the royal court of the Mwata Kazembe, Moise Tshombe (1919–1969) founded the CONAKAT party. Eleven days after Congolese independence in July 1960, backed by Belgian mining giant Union Miniere, Tshombe declared the secession of Katanga.

Katangan secession precipitated the Congo Crisis and UN military intervention. Defeated by UN forces in 1963, Tshombe fled to Spain, but was recalled in 1964 by President Kasa-Vubu to serve as Prime Minister to suppress the Simba rebellion. Kidnapped aboard an airplane in 1967 and flown to Algeria, he died in detention.
