Archival Overview
Legendary Sudanese Nubian singer, composer, and patriotic icon acclaimed as 'The Last Pharaoh', whose majestic baritone voice, revolutionary anthems, and mastery of five-tone pentatonic scales made him Sudan's most beloved cultural figure.
Biographical Record
Born in the ancient Nubian town of Sawarda, Wardi worked as a schoolteacher before moving to Omdurman in 1957 to audition for national radio. Singing in both Arabic and Nubian, he revolutionized Sudanese music by introducing the saxophone and electric guitar to traditional rhythms.
A fierce champion of democracy, freedom, and workers' rights, Wardi was repeatedly imprisoned and spent thirteen years in exile. His soaring patriotic anthems, such as 'Ya Sha'ban Lahabaka Thawritak' and 'Al-Mursaal', soundtracked every popular uprising in modern Sudanese history.
