Archival Overview
Prolific Moroccan historian, jurist, and anti-colonial intellectual whose monumental 20-volume encyclopedia al-Ma'sul rescued the Amazigh scholarly, poetic, and Sufi heritage of the Anti-Atlas mountains.
Biographical Record
Born in the Souss oasis of Iligh, Sidi Mohammed Mokhtar Soussi was educated at the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, becoming an active leader in the Moroccan nationalist movement. Confined under house arrest by French colonial authorities in his home village from 1937 to 1945, he turned forced isolation into historic scholarship.
He traversed the Anti-Atlas mountains, cataloging thousands of private Berber manuscript collections and oral biographies, culminating in his 20-volume encyclopedia Al-Ma'sul (The Honeycomb) and Souss al-Alima. Following independence, he served as Morocco's first Minister of Crown Properties.
