Biographical Record
Mohammed ibn Jaafar al-Kattani was born into the prestigious Kattani scholarly family of Fez. Educated at al-Qarawiyyin, he became the paramount authority on prophetic traditions (hadith) in North Africa, teaching thousands of students in Morocco, Damascus, and Medina.
His encyclopedic biographical dictionary 'Salwat al-Anfas wa Muhadathat al-Akyas' preserved biographical notices of over a thousand Moroccan scholars, Sufis, poets, and statesmen. A fervent opponent of French colonial rule, he helped lead the popular boycotts of colonial monopolies in Fez.
