Archival Overview
Pioneering master of classical Gulf Sout music and oud virtuoso whose early phonograph recordings in Baghdad and Bahrain preserved Arabian musical heritage.
Biographical Record
Mohammed bin Faris was born in 1895 in Muharraq, the historic cultural capital of Bahrain. Born into a prominent family, he became fascinated by traditional Arabian vocal music and the lute (oud), traveling extensively to Bombay, Basra, and Muscat to study regional musical traditions.
Bin Faris became the defining exponent of Sout—the rich, polyrhythmic musical tradition of the Gulf characterized by the oud, violin, vocal improvisation, and rhythmic clapping (mirwas). In the 1930s, he made historic shellac gramophone recordings with the His Master's Voice and Odeon recording companies. His home in Muharraq was restored as the Mohammed bin Faris Music House to preserve his artistic legacy.
