Archival Overview
Master diplomat under Sultan Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdallah who negotiated the liberation of thousands of Muslim captives from Spain and Malta, author of the diplomatic masterpieces Al-Iksir and Al-Badr al-Safir.
Biographical Record
Muhammad ibn Uthman al-Meknassi served as the chief ambassador of Sultan Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdallah. Between 1779 and 1782, he was dispatched to Madrid to sign the landmark Hispano-Moroccan Treaty and negotiate the redemption of hundreds of Moroccan and Algerian captives held in Spain.
His diplomatic travelogues—including Al-Iksir fi Fikak al-Asir (The Elixir for the Release of Captives) and Al-Badr al-Safir—are jewels of Enlightenment-era travel literature, describing Spanish courts, Italian ports, and the island of Malta with astute sociological precision.
