Biographical Record
Mohammed al-Mukhtar Soussi was born into a prominent scholarly family in the Anti-Atlas mountains. Studying in Marrakech and Fez, he joined the nascent Moroccan nationalist movement in the 1920s, promoting modern education and political resistance to the French Protectorate.
Exiled by colonial authorities to his native village in the Souss in 1937, Soussi turned adversity into triumph by interviewing elders and researching local archives. Over sixteen years, he compiled 'Al-Ma'sul' (The Sweet Mead), a magnificent twenty-volume regional encyclopedia. Following independence, he served King Mohammed V as Minister of Islamic Affairs.
