Biographical Record

Mohammed Abed al-Jabri (1935–2010) was born in the desert oasis of Figuig in eastern Morocco. Earning his doctorate in philosophy at Mohammed V University in Rabat, he taught philosophy and Islamic thought there for over thirty years, becoming the intellectual beacon of Arab rationalist philosophy.

Between 1984 and 2001, Al-Jabri published his magnum opus, Naqd al-Aql al-Arabi (The Critique of Arab Reason), in four volumes: The Formation of Arab Reason, The Structure of Arab Reason, Arab Political Reason, and Arab Ethical Reason. Al-Jabri championed the rationalist Maghrebi-Andalusian tradition of Averroes (Ibn Rushd) and Ibn Khaldun over mystical-gnostic systems, advocating for a modern Arab democratic enlightenment.
