Mohammed Abdel Wahab was a monumental Egyptian singer, actor, and composer whose career dominated 20th-century Arab music. A protégé of Ahmed Shawqi (the 'Prince of Poets'), Abdel Wahab was an extraordinary oud virtuoso who introduced Western musical instruments—such as the electric guitar, accordion, cello, and castanets—and Latin rhythms (waltz, tango, rumba) into the classical Arabic musical system.
Abdel Wahab starred in Egypt's earliest musical sound films in the 1930s. He composed legendary epic love songs for the iconic Umm Kulthum, including 'Enta Omri' ('You Are My Life', 1964), dubbed the 'Meeting of the Clouds'. He also composed the national anthems of Libya, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia.
