Biographical Record
Mohammad Hatta (1902–1980) was a brilliant Minangkabau economist educated at the Rotterdam School of Economics, where he led the anti-colonial Perhimpunan Indonesia student movement. Exiled by Dutch colonial authorities to the malaria-infested Boven-Digoel concentration camp in West Papua, Hatta took sixteen trunks of books and continued teaching fellow prisoners.
On August 17, 1945, in Jakarta, Hatta and Sukarno read the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. At the 1949 Round Table Conference in The Hague, Hatta's masterclass diplomacy compelled the Kingdom of the Netherlands to formally transfer sovereignty to the United States of Indonesia. Revering democratic cooperatives over capitalist monopolies, he is honored as the 'Father of Indonesian Cooperatives'.
