Archival Overview

Soulful Chaabi singer of Algiers famous for his heart-rending, melancholic delivery of 'Chouffou El Hali', whose emotional phrasing deeply influenced Guerouabi.

Biographical Record

Mohamed Zerbout was born in the Casbah of Algiers and emerged as one of the most uniquely gifted Chaabi interpreters of the post-war era. Studying under Cheikh Mustapha Mouchène and Cheikh Khelifa Belkacem, he possessed a vocal style of rare, vulnerable melancholy.

His 1950s recording of 'Chouffou El Hali' (Behold My Plight) remains one of the supreme emotional masterworks of Algerian Chaabi music. Despite dying prematurely at age forty-seven in 1983, Zerbout's vocal phrasing and delicate mandole accents remain studied by aspiring masters.
