Archival Overview
Heroic ALN field commander in Wilaya 3 (Kabylie), known as 'Vrirouche', celebrated for his daring mountain ambushes and unyielding defense against colonial paratroopers.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Yazourene, universally known across the maquis by the affectionate Berber honorific 'Vrirouche', was an early militant of the Algerian People's Party (PPA) and an esteemed commander in Wilaya 3 under Colonel Amirouche. His intimate knowledge of the rugged forested peaks of the Akfadou and Djurdjura made his units virtually invincible.
During the massive French 'Opération Jumelles' in 1959, Vrirouche directed intricate tactical dispersal maneuvers that preserved entire ALN batallions from annihilation. His humility, tactical cunning, and fierce paternal care for his young soldiers made him a living legend of the revolutionary war.
