Archival Overview
The undisputed 'King of Constantine Malouf', master violinist with a golden voice who preserved and recorded the ancient Andalusian musical patrimony of eastern Algeria.
Biographical Record
Hadj Mohamed Tahar Fergani was born in Constantine into an illustrious family of master musicians. Beginning his musical journey on the tar (tambourine) and mandole, he mastered the classical violin, which he played vertically on his knee in the noble classical style while singing in a peerless four-octave tenor voice.
Over a recording career spanning six decades, Fergani recorded and preserved the entirety of the twenty-four traditional Andalusian 'Nubahs' of Constantine Malouf. Revering traditional poetry and ornamentation, he performed to international acclaim from Cairo and Paris to Tokyo, standing as a cultural pillar of Algerian identity.
