"The voice of Hay Mohammadi chanted the pain of the oppressed and the dawn of hope."

Archival Overview

Legendary lead singer and charismatic soul of the group Lemchaheb from Hay Mohammadi, whose piercing high tenor voice and evocative lyrics on 'Daouini' and 'Baghi N'etoub' made him an idol of Moroccan youth.

Biographical Record

Mohamed Sousdi was born in the working-class incubator of modern Moroccan culture, Hay Mohammadi in Casablanca. In 1974, he joined Cherif Lamrani, M'bark Cheddali, and Saida Birouk to found Lemchaheb, becoming the explosive vocal frontman of the legendary band.

His extraordinary vocal range, combining Saharan passion with Gnawa grit, carried the band's anthems of social revolt, freedom, and human solidarity across Morocco, Algeria, and Europe until his death in 2012.
