Archival Overview
Towering Algerian diplomat and Foreign Minister who mediated the resolution of the 1979-1981 Iran Hostage Crisis, dying tragically on a peace mission to halt the Iran-Iraq War.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Seddik Benyahia studied law at the University of Algiers, becoming president of the UGEMA student union and joining the FLN in 1956. At age twenty-eight, he served as secretary-general of the GPRA, participating in the delicate negotiations of the Evian Accords.
As Foreign Minister under Chadli Bendjedid, Benyahia displayed consummate diplomatic brilliance, successfully negotiating the historic Algiers Accords on January 19, 1981, which secured the release of 52 American hostages in Tehran. On May 3, 1982, his peace mission jet was struck by an air-to-air missile over the Iran-Iraq border, cutting short the life of one of Africa's greatest diplomats.
